Introductory French I 39L, 13P

An intensive basic course in spoken and written French: comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing.
Exclusion: Not open to students who have studied French in secondary school. Not open to native or fluent speakers of French

Introductory French II 39L, 13P

An intensive basic course in spoken and written French for students who have studied some French, but who have not yet attained the entry level for FSL121Y1.
Exclusion: FSL 121Y1 or higher/Grade 11 French or higher. Not open to native or fluent speakers of French.
Prerequisite: FSL100H1


FSL121Y1
Intermediate French 78L, 26P

Written and spoken French, reinforcing oral/aural competence, reading comprehension, and writing skills.
Exclusion: FSL161Y1 or higher/OAC French. Not open to native or fluent speakers of French
Prerequisite: FSL102H1


FSL161Y1
Practical French 52L, 26P

Emphasis is placed on both reading and listening comprehension, expression, both written and oral, and independent learning. Particularly recommended for students who wish to maintain and improve their general knowledge of French without wishing to specialize.
Exclusion: FSL181Y1 or higher/OAC French (Immersion). Not open to native or fluent speakers of French
Prerequisite: FSL121Y1/OAC French

Practical French: Oral 39S

Designed for students who wish to broaden their knowledge of French without wishing to specialize. Focus is placed on the improvement of listening comprehension and oral expression, with an emphasis on effective communication. Special attention is given to helping students acquire self-learning skills.
Exclusion: FSL181Y1 or higher/OAC French (Immersion). Not open to native or fluent speakers of French

Language Practice I 52L, 26T, 26P

A variety of approaches to language learning, aimed at helping students develop their written and oral skills. Computer-assisted instruction and the multi-media learning centres provide additional learning opportunities. Particularly recommended for students who wish to specialize or major in French.
Exclusion: FSL161Y1/FRE180Y1/FSL 261Y1 or higher/OAC French (Immersion). Not open to native or fluent speakers of French.

Practical French II 78S

Language of the Media, Multimedia, Internet 78S

Development of skills in practical French (reading, writing, listening, speaking) based on traditional media as well as on multimedia resources available in French, including those of the Internet. (Not offered in 2002-2003)

Prerequisite: FRE150Y1/FSL161Y1/181Y1/OAC French (Immersion)

Language of International Relations 78S

Development of written and oral language skills and enrichment of vocabulary through readings, audio-visual material and discussions on a variety of topics related to International Relations. Designed primarily but not only for students enrolled in the International Relations Program.
Exclusion: FSL361Y1 or higher. Not open to native or fluent speakers of French
Prerequisite: FRE150Y1/FSL161Y1/181Y1/OAC French (Immersion)

Reading French 26S

Designed to develop students’ reading skills particularly as they pertain to research interests. Some remedial grammar, but the primary emphasis is on comprehension of a wide variety of texts in French. This course may not count towards a Major or Specialist program in French.
Exclusion: FSL361Y1 or higher. Not open to native or fluent speakers of French

Language Practice II: Written and Oral French 78L, 26P

This course is designed for those who wish to improve their written expression with textual study and develop their oral and aural skills. The course is also designed for students who want to specialize or major in French studies.
Exclusion: FSL 261Y1/282H1/361Y1 or higher. Not open to native or fluent speakers of French.
Prerequisite: FRE180Y1/FSL161Y1(73%)/181Y1

Practical French III 78S

Emphasis is placed on both reading and listening comprehension, expression, both written and oral, and independent learning. Particularly intended for students who wish to maintain and improve their general knowledge of French without wishing to specialize.

La Francophonie 78S

An advanced course in practical French (reading, writing, listening, speaking), aimed at broadening understanding of the range of cultures and societies of the francophone world, based in part on multimedia resources available in French, including those of the Internet.
Exclusion: FSL 461Y1 or higher. Not open to native or fluent speakers of French
Prerequisite: Any 200-series FSL course

Business French 39S

A study of vocabulary, grammar and writing techniques involved in business situations, including cross-cultural transactions. Students may be introduced to business-oriented multimedia resources, including those of the Internet.
Exclusion: FRE301H1/FSL 461Y1 or higher. Not open to native or fluent speakers of French
Prerequisite: Any 200-series FSL course

Language Practice III: Written French and Oral French 78L, 26P

Advanced work in written expression and textual study, with in-depth analysis of spoken French and consolidation of aural skills. For those specializing in French Studies.
Exclusion: FSL 361Y1/382H1 or higher. Not open to native or fluent speakers of French
Prerequisite: FSL281Y1/282H1, 283H1

Language Practice III: Written French 39S

This course is designed for students who want to consolidate the writing skills they already had acquired as students specializing in French Studies. (Not offered in 2002-2003)

Language Practice III: Oral French 39S

This course is designed for students who want to consolidate the oral skills they already acquired as students specializing in French Studies. (Not offered in 2002-2003)

Practical French IV 78S

For students who wish to improve their general knowledge of French while specializing in other fields of study.

Reading French: Language of Law 39S

Specific features of the language used in legal documents. This course is intended to familiarize students with juridical vocabulary and structures. (Not offered in 2002-2003)

Spoken French: Language of Law 39S

Specific features of the language used in the courtroom, policy discussions and the media. Practical applications through classroom presentations, discussions, workshops and role-play.

Language Practice IV: Written French 39S

A course designed to diversify the student’s ability to understand and write texts of various genres.
Exclusion: Not open to native or fluent speakers of French

Language Practice IV: Oral French 39S

Students receive advanced training in aural comprehension and in the production of the appropriate oral performance in a variety of situations.
