SAS114Y1 An interdisciplinary introduction to South Asian Studies emphasizing inquiry and critical analysis, drawing attention to the specificities of individual nations as well as the factors (historical, political, economic and cultural) that define it as a region. Some attention will be paid to the South Asian diaspora. SAS210Y1 Intended for students with little or no knowledge of written Sanskrit. NEW214Y1 See Buddhism, Psychology and Mental Health courses in the New College entry SAS215H1 An interdisciplinary history, beginning with colonialism as a moment of transition, of the ways in which colonial ideology and indigenous resistance shaped the contours of culture and politics in Bengal until Independence; consideration of factors that provide a sense of unity to Bengali culture while accommodating changes and transformations. (Taught in the summer program only). SAS216H1 A critical overview of contemporary South Asia, considering historical and social
factors that account for both distinctiveness and connections among regions,
nations, and communities. Major themes in the study of society and politics
include caste, gender, ethnicity, models of government, religion, and political
economy. Special attention will be paid to the major role played by colonialism
and postcolonial histories in establishing the separate trajectories of each
nation, while considering interconnections among nations and communities and
broader global flows of people, ideas, and things. SAS217H1 An interdisciplinary approach that explains the complexity and multiplicity
of Tamil culture. An historical approach to the evolution of Tamil culture
over
the last twenty centuries. Issues of region, space, politics and religion will
aid in an understanding of contemporary Tamil culture, both in South Asia and

Distinction between Chaste and Standard Colloquial styles of the language. SAS413H1 2009-2010 topic: Reading South Asian from a Canadian Perspective. A seminar course that deals with contemporary Canada and South Asia, drawing attention to the various ways in which Canada and Canadians engage with different aspects of South Asia’s social, political, cultural and economic life. The approach will be broadly inter-disciplinary, and students will be expected to undertake at least one research assignment on some aspect of Canada-South Asia relations.
