Greetings from the Dean

I have the pleasure of welcoming you to a new academic year in the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Your Faculty offers a greater variety of courses and programs than any other Faculty of its kind in Canada. I urge you to take advantage of this singular opportunity to develop innovative course combinations to complement your own individual talents and aspirations, and to sample fields you might otherwise never have a chance to explore.

For those of you entering first year, the First Year Seminar 199Y courses (see separate booklet) provide a unique opportunity to engage in a rigorous academic discussion in a small group setting. Second year students may wish to consider the Research Opportunities Program (299Y). And for third year students we have a new offering beginning this year, the Experiential Study Program (399Y), offering opportunities to conduct research under faculty supervision in off-campus sites, such as archives, museums, etc. I invite you to inquire at the Program Office, 1022 Sidney Smith, for information.

I also urge you to consider the steadily increasing opportunities available through the Study Elsewhere and Exchange Office to pursue your studies in your third year in another country. We now have exchanges with Great Britain, Europe, Asia, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand - even with other institutions in Canada!

Whatever the case, I encourage you to take advantage of the sheer diversity of learning opportunities the Calendar presents. Departmental counsellors and college registrars are always available to provide advice and guidance. The Calendar is also available on-line; the Faculty’s web site provides classroom and examination timetables and other resources. The Web address is at the bottom of each page of the Calendar.

With best wishes for a successful and enjoyable academic year in the Faculty of Arts and Science,

Carl G. Amrhein
Dean
